Chelsea's woes continued as they lost at home to Aston Villa and Sheffield United slumped to the bottom of the table as they suffered a humiliating 8-0 home thrashing by Newcastle United in which eight different Newcastle players scored. The first north London Premier League derby since 2014 not to feature Harry Kane produced an enthralling contest at The Emirates where the two unbeaten sides went toe-to-toe. Arsenal twice led, first through Cristian Romero's 26th-minute own goal, and again thanks to Bukayo Saka's penalty early in the second half. Mitoma then wrapped up the points as Brighton moved above Tottenham and Arsenal with 15 points. Newcastle ran riot at Sheffield United in the weekend's final action as they put eight past the hapless Blades -- their biggest win in the Premier League since they put eight past Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he sympathises with current incumbent Erik ten Hag who is under pressure after a poor start to the season. It's a dream job, but it's difficult," Solskjaer said in an interview with The Athletic. "It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong," Solskjaer said. Solskjaer never won a trophy as a coach at United, the closest being the 2021 Europa League final when they lost to Villarreal on penalties. Kuss victory can boost U.S. road racing, says Horner
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Sepp Kuss's unlikely victory in La Vuelta a Espana could provide a timely boost for a flagging road cycle racing scene in the United States, according to Chris Horner whose 2013 triumph Kuss emulated on Sunday. The 29-year-old Kuss entered the race as a 'domestique' for more illustrious Jumbo-Visma team mates Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic. The road race scene is hardly booming in the U.S with few stage-racing opportunities for up-and-coming riders after the demise of the Tour of California, Colorado and Utah. "The racing scene in the U.S. is drowning or at best its nose is over the water. They were having meetings before the race, during the race, after the race, and then before everyone went to bed.

American Kuss crowned Vuelta champion, Groves wins in Madrid

The 29-year-old ended 17 seconds ahead of Denmark's Tour de France winner Vingegaard with Slovenia's Giro d'Italia winner Roglic one minute and eight seconds behind in third place. There was a celebratory mood amongst the Dutch team on the 101km 21st stage that concluded on a street circuit around the landmarks of Madrid. But the battle for the stage victory was a high-octane thriller as a small lead group featuring Groves and Remco Evenepoel was caught by the peloton in the final 500m. While Kuss celebrated the overall victory, Groves secured the green jersey for the points category -- the first Australian to achieve that in the Vuelta. When Kuss took the red jersey from Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) on stage eight, most thought he was just keeping it warm for either Vingegaard or Roglic.

Trossard goal seals Arsenal win at Everton
  + stars: | 2023-09-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LIVERPOOL, England, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Arsenal claimed their first Premier League win at Everton for six years as Leandro Trossard's second-half strike proved enough to secure the points at Goodison Park on Sunday. Everton, still without a win this season, had managed to frustrate the visitors who had a Gabriel Martinelli goal ruled out for offside via VAR in the first period. Unbeaten Arsenal joined Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on 13 points from five games, two points behind leaders Manchester City who have a 100% record. Arsenal's last league win at Everton in 2017 ended the reign of Ronald Koeman and while Sean Dyche is unlikely to suffer a similar fate, he has a huge task on his hands. But Arsenal eventually unpicked their defence with a short-corner eventually being fed in to Martin Odegaard who released Bukayo Saka on the right side of the penalty area.

Evenepoel's hopes of fighting the Jumbo-Visma riders for the overall title evaporated on stage 13 when he was dropped on the Col d'Aubisque and lost 27 minutes. "It was a super good opportunity to take the points for my jersey -- I took all the points -- and my third stage win is amazing to end the Vuelta with." The transfer window, which was open from June 14 to Sept. 1, exceeded last year's record 1.92 billion pounds, with the top-flight clubs spending 255 million pounds on deadline day alone, it said. But anticipation is building for the visit of West Ham, who will become the first top-flight team to play a league match at Kenilworth Road since Aston Villa 31 years ago. The volume created by the Hatters fans crammed in on Friday will shake the 118-year-old stadium to its foundations. Forward Cauley Woodrow, who scored in the League Cup win at Kenilworth Road against Gillingham this week, said Luton needed to turn their home into an intimidating 'fortress'. Arsenal's priority will be avoiding any repeat of the early goals they have conceded on a regular basis at home of late.
